Created by Ed Key and David Kanaga, this particular game reminds a lot of the experience in Dear Esther, in which we were on an uncharted island to wander far and wide, while the events took place through a story. The structure is very similar, in fact, Proteus our task is essentially to explore the main location and nothing else: an island located in the middle of an ocean. As if dreaming with open eyes, Proteus is only darkness for a few moments, but when we open our eyes begin our journey, here’s the vision … An explosion of colors to compose a colorful landscape to be envied for artistic quality, and which emerges above the water. It is only the beginning.
In the game we will do reconnaissance and scaled the heights or chases the creatures meet, so unique visions of mountains full of statues from which it is as if they come to life in the night, storms, shooting stars that light up the dark sky. And then rolling plains filled with flowering trees, or are dropping their leaves, and gravestones tombs around. A few minutes of travel, or hours and hours of entertainment, this is Proteus: a computer that tries to take us up, making us forget what could be the difficulties of everyday life thanks to a graphic style and old-style to a column sound exciting.
Look for the complete absence of clues, or text on the screen, or objectives, Proteus is able to move, reaching the main goal that developers were going to get. That makes a whole on how each experience throughout life can be constructive, and you do not need the complexity of the genius and simplicity results can be much more important and that touch the heart and mind. Often no possibility of escape.
Proteus uses the technique of the highest quality because they want to attract the player capturing his senses, immersing it in a game world alive and full of color, which is constantly evolving. We’ll see scroll through the seasons and, therefore, the change of scenery, but we will also in front of several species of animals, we can catch up to listen to the lovely music that the developers have decided to accompany their feet on the ground, and all this through a process of exploration that represents the soul of the game. It is difficult to remain indifferent to a landscape so evocative, which can be matched sound effects and music of rare beauty in a world different and never the same, given the random creation that will be generated on every trip.
Like every experience that tries to go beyond, are also made of the reflections on the title: that island is explored? And because we are near it? These questions are, needless to say, each of us could give different answers depending on the emotional states that Proteus has sparked in us of one thing all agree, at least I hope: be drunk trying to get into a different perspective from that used to deal with a shooter or sports title.
Proteus is an experimental basis created by two guys who decided to give us something different from the usual, it is an experience worth trying, because it is necessary to fully understand how the independent sector is growing and how good some productions.
